Overview of 6th, 7th and 8th Grade Mathematics

The mathematics curriculums for the middle school grades provide a scope and sequence skills to be presented. Given the extensive variety of developmental needs and wide range of learning styles, we work providing differentiated instruction based on the individual needs of our students.

Students experience hands on work with manipulatives and mathematical tools, strategies encouraging discovery and exploration, simulations, real life problem solving and practical application of skills. Through independent and group activities the students become active problem solvers and begin to access a variety of resources to make math real and meaningful.

The specific skills addressed in the middle school curriculum include: Numbers and Operations, Mathematical Processes, Geometry and Spatial Sense, Measurement, Patterns, Functions and Algebra, Data Analysis and Probability, Individual and Group Problem Solving, and Practical Application.

Informal algebraic experiences are imbedded into the middle school math curriculum. This allows for developing confidence in utilizing algebra to represent and solve problems. The 7th and 8th grade Pre-Algebra curriculums expand the amount of time that students have to make the transition to more abstract ways of thinking.

Once again the goal is to encourage learners at all levels to “know math by doing math”. Both the 6th, 7th, 8th Mathematics and the 7th and 8th Pre-Algebra curriculums have been aligned with the New Jersey Core Content Curriculum Standards for Mathematics. An extensive list of materials, strategies, and assessments has been presented in order to provide students with a wide variety of opportunities to experience math and be successful.
